Scientists recently discovered a cave near the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon, not far from the site of the famous moon landing in 1969. This cave is an important discovery in lunar exploration because it can be used as a home for astronauts.
Study findings
The study, titled “Radar evidence for an accessible cavernous channel on the Moon beneath Mare Tranquillitis crater,” was published in Nature Astronomy and provides more details about the discovery. Researchers looked at photographs taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2010 and found a crater they believe is the entrance to the cave. The crater was formed when a lava tube collapsed. That tube is a tunnel that formed when molten lava flowed beneath a solid surface. The width of the cave is about 45 meters and its length can reach 80 meters.
Lunar craters and caves
Unlike lunar craters, which formed when asteroids collided with the Moon, lunar craters are large craters with steep walls that were typically created by volcanoes more than a billion years ago. More than 200 of these craters have been found so far and 16 of them have been confirmed to have been caused by collapsed lava tubes. People have been asking about these buildings for more than 50 years, but only now has an accessible door been discovered.
Benefits of human shelter
Due to the lack of oxygen, the surface of the Moon is inhospitable and very hot. At the height of the lunar day, temperatures can reach 127 degrees Celsius. At night the temperature drops to about -173 degrees Celsius. The temperature of the cave where it was discovered remains constant at around 17 degrees Celsius, which is much better for human life. The cave could also provide protection from solar radiation and micrometeorites, making it an excellent option for a future lunar base or emergency shelter.
Challenges and future research
Although the lunar caves are safe, they are difficult to access and stabilize. It is necessary to carefully consider aspects such as possible avalanches or landslides. Researchers say more research is needed to fully understand how these caves formed. This can be done with the help of ground-penetrating radars, robots or special cameras. For these caves to be good places to stay long-term, they will also need systems to monitor seismic activity and safety zones to keep travelers safe from any geological hazards. Ultimately, finding a lunar cave opens up interesting possibilities for living on the Moon in the future, but many studies and technological advances are needed to fully exploit these possibilities.
