Recent research published in Science has revealed an unprecedented decline in glaciers in the Andes, surprising scientists who thought these changes would take decades to become apparent. This rapid decline in glaciers indicates climate changes that may affect the global environment.
Study overview
The study, led by Andrew Gorin, used carbon dating to examine newly discovered bedrock caused by retreating glaciers. Initial doubts were dispelled when repeated tests showed significant declines in levels of beryllium-10 and carbon-14, indicating widespread glacial melting. The research found that the exposed bedrock was not discovered during the Holocene epoch (about 11,700 years ago) and likely dates to the last interglacial period, about 115,000 years ago. This suggests that glaciers are younger today than they were thousands of years ago.
Geographical significance
The Andes contain 99% of the world’s tropical glaciers, making them particularly vulnerable to climate change. Their location near sub-zero temperatures means they respond quickly to changes in weather patterns. Gorín warns that the changes seen in the Andes could be a sign of broader global climate changes. They suggest that similar changes could soon occur in other regions, signalling a move away from the stable climate conditions on which modern civilisation depends.
About the Andes Mountains
The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world, stretching over 7,000 kilometres. They form a natural barrier between the Pacific Ocean and the Amazon basin. This mountain range is home to over 7,000 plant species and includes the world’s highest active volcano, Ojos del Salado, at 6,893 metres high. The Andes support diverse ecosystems, including the unique grasslands of the Puna, and were the centre of the advanced Inca civilisation. In addition, the Andes are an important source of valuable minerals, particularly copper and lithium.
