Cabinet gives green signal to eight new high-speed road corridor initiatives

Recently, the Union Cabinet approved a mega plan for eight high-speed road corridor projects totalling 936 km, in which a total investment of Rs 50,000 crore will be made. These projects are designed to improve connectivity for both pilgrims and freight transport in different areas.

Overview of major projects

The approved projects include a four-lane ring road in Ayodhya, designed to facilitate pilgrims to visit the Ram temple. This road, a bypass in Guwahati, will help improve travel and connectivity in the region.

Ayodhya Bypass Road

  • Length: 68 kilometres
  • Cost: ₹ 3,935 crores
  • Objective: This four-lane highway will help pilgrims visiting the Ram Temple by providing easy access from Lucknow airport and major railway stations. It aims to enhance the pilgrimage experience for both domestic and international tourists.

Guwahati Bypass

  • Length: 121 kilometres
  • Cost: ₹ 5,729 crores
  • Features: It includes a major bridge over the Brahmaputra River.
  • Connectivity: It will bridge long-distance traffic on National Highway 27, connecting cities like Siliguri, Silchar, Shillong and Tezpur, thereby improving regional connectivity.

Tharad to Ahmedabad Corridor

  • Length: 214 kilometres
  • Lane Configuration: Six lanes

Delhi-Mumbai Expressway

Freight Benefits: It will increase transport routes to major ports in Maharashtra for industrial areas in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, thereby helping in freight transportation.

Agra to Gwalior Corridor

  • Length: 88 kilometres
  • Cost: ₹ 4,613 crores
  • Significance: The project will provide improved travel connectivity between Agra and Gwalior, thereby promoting economic connectivity and regional integration.
