The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is facing serious problems due to climate change. Recently, scientists have discovered that sea surface temperatures are the highest in more than 400 years. This rapid increase in temperatures has caused massive coral bleaching, putting the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem at great risk.
Understanding Coral Bleaching
Coral bleaching occurs when corals become stressed due to warm water, pollution, or other damaging factors. This stress causes them to expel tiny organisms called dinoflagellates, which they need to survive. If the stress is short-lived, corals can recover, but if it lasts too long, corals can die.
Historical Context
Coral bleaching occurs when corals become stressed due to warm water, pollution, or other damaging factors. This stress causes them to expel tiny organisms called dinoflagellates, which they need to survive. Corals can recover if the stress is short-lived, but if it lasts too long, corals can die.
Estimated future impact
Even if we manage to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, we could still lose 70-90% of the corals that exist today. Forecasts suggest that global temperatures could rise by 1.9°C to 3.2°C by the end of this century, with devastating impacts on coral reefs and the millions of people who depend on them. If current trends continue, coral communities may become much less diverse, jeopardizing their ecological function and resilience. This situation demands urgent action to protect and conserve the GBR.
About the Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system, stretching over 2,300 kilometres and consisting of approximately 2,900 separate reefs and 900 islands. It is home to over 1,500 species of fish and is home to a wide range of marine life, including turtles and dolphins. This rock is so large that it can even be seen from space, stretching over an area of some 344,400 square kilometres. Coral reefs can live up to a thousand years, but despite being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the GBR faces serious threats from climate change and coral bleaching.
