India aims to become a $30 trillion economy by 2047, the 100th anniversary of its independence. According to the NITI Aayog’s Vision for Developed India @ 2047, it aims to raise the average per capita income to $18,000 per annum. The scheme is designed to prevent India from becoming stuck in the middle income bracket.
Economic aspirations
To achieve this goal, India needs to grow its economy from the current $3.36 trillion to $30 trillion, which means India will need to grow nine times over the next few decades. The average income per capita would also have to rise from $2,392 to $18,000. The report says the transition from middle-income to high-income countries will require a steady 7-10% annual growth rate for 20-30 years. Only a few countries have been able to sustain such high growth rates continuously.
Define a developed India
The idea of a better India is to create a country with better incomes and better social, cultural, technological and institutional characteristics. According to the World Bank, the average per capita income in the high-income country is more than US$14,005 (by 2023). The plan identifies several key challenges, such as improving manufacturing and logistics capacity and reducing the income gap between rural and urban areas. These reforms are necessary to transform the agricultural workforce into a strong industrial workforce.
Team games
The NITI Aayog stressed that achieving this vision requires the participation of the entire country, not just a few individuals or governments. The document highlights that this is a pivotal moment for India, suggesting that the 21st century could be India’s century. Success depends on striking a balance between energy security, access, affordability and sustainability.
