Ivory Coast joins UN Water Convention as Tenth African Member

With its recent membership, Côte d’Ivoire became the 10th African country to sign the UN Water Treaty. This access is important because it makes it easier for everyone to work together to better manage water resources, which is especially important now as water scarcity and climate change impacts are worsening in the region.

Background of UN Water Convention

Its full name is the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes. In 1992, the UN Water Convention was formed primarily for the European region. In 2016, its goals became more global so that all UN member countries could come together to support the long-term management of shared water supplies.

Water Resources Challenges in Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast shares eight transboundary and river basins with six of its neighbors. These areas are under a lot of water pressure. Climate change has made important rivers like the Niger very vulnerable and their flow is expected to decline significantly.

The Importance of Cooperative Water Management

Countries must work together to ensure that transboundary water is used in a manner that does not harm the environment. Since Côte d’Ivoire is very vulnerable to climate change and does not have much water, joining the agreement will make it easier for countries in the region to work together on water management.

More About the UN Water Treaty

The “Treaty on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes”, legally known as the UN Water Conference, was signed in 1992. It encourages the sustainable control of water across borders. It has only been ratified by 47 countries, most of which are in Europe. The agreement emphasizes the fair and equitable use of shared water supplies. Motivates people to get involved in water management. Changes made in 2016 may also include states that are not members of the United Nations. ECE is in charge of the personnel. There are rules to keep the water clean and avoid wastage.
