NASA has made major strides in exoplanet studies by confirming six new exoplanets, bringing the total to 5,502. This is an important step towards knowing the possibility of life beyond the universe and Earth. Poltergeist and Phobotor, the first exoplanets discovered in 1992, began their journey by orbiting the pulsar PSRB1257+12. By March 2022, the number of searches exceeded 5,000, showing how fast the field is growing.
Observations of new exoplanets
Detection techniques
Several methods are used to find exoplanets:
Role of TESS and other telescopes
Since its launch in 2018, NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has helped discover many potential exoplanets. The Spitzer, Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes are some of the other telescopes that have made significant contributions to the study of exoplanets. NASA plans to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in May 2027. The telescope will have a coronagraph device for direct imaging. The technology could make possible projects like the Habitable Worlds Observatory, which would look for signs of life outside of Earth.
More information about exoplanets
There are over 5,000 confirmed exoplanets, which are worlds outside our solar system. 51 Pegasi B, the first proven exoplanet, was found in The transit method is used to find most exosolar planets by observing the fading of light as a star passes by a planet. The Kepler space telescope found a large number of possible planets. Two orbiting planets are exoplanets orbiting stars. Hot Jupiter, a gas giant near its star, tests ideas about how planets grow. Microlensing studies use two methods: radial velocity and gravity. TRAPPIST-1 has seven planets the size of Earth. This idea dates back to ancient times when philosophers wondered about places beyond our own.
