Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is said to visit India in early July 2026. The visit is expected to include talks on bilateral issues with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to be the venue with Assam. The site selected is symbolic. Northeast Assam is also building a major semiconductor factory, a project that speaks to the growing economic and technological connections between the two countries (India and Japan). The two will discuss economic relations, security alliances and regional challenges, especially in light of China’s growing military and economic clout in Asia.
Over the last decade, India and Japan have built a healthy alliance based on common democratic ideals, economic aspirations and geopolitical interests. The two countries are both part of the G20 and the Quad, where they collaborate on global and regional issues. Their engagement received further impetus with the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership launched in 2014, which provided a framework to discuss infrastructure development, investment opportunities, technology collaboration and defence cooperation.
The two countries have a very pragmatic relationship, ambitions for economic growth and strategic insight. For instance, Japan has consistently supported India’s infrastructure projects ranging from high-speed rail programs to industrial corridors, while India has, in turn, offered conducive investment conditions for Japanese businesses. The synergy has produced a win-win situation where economic aspirations are closely aligned with strategic imperatives.
Assam is not just another State in India, it is a vital gateway in the North-East. The state is playing a key role in India-Japan Act East Forum, an attempt to modernise India’s north eastern region through infrastructure, connectivity and industrial development. The choice of Assam as a possible venue for the Prime Ministerial talks shows Japan’s readiness to contribute to regional development and economic integration.
The form of the semiconductor facility in Assam is illustrative of this partnership. This project is like a keystone in an arch which connects local growth with global technology trends, preventing the northeast from remaining on the periphery and making it a pivotal node in India’s economic and technology map.” This is also part of Japan’s broader approach of investing in emerging markets to ensure supply chains for key technologies.
Diplomatic relations between the two nations have been lively and substantive. PM Modi and PM Takaichi meet at G20 Summit in Johannesburg on 23rd Nov 2025. They discussed about working together in security, commerce & technology. The relationship was further reinforced when Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu paid a visit to India on 26 May 2026 for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ conference, underscoring Japan’s desire to maintain close cooperation on regional security challenges and economic cooperation.
The contact at the top level is regular, as is the dialogue and strategic alignment. The July visit is not ceremonial, but a continuation of an established partnership.
The India-Japan collaboration is characterized by a few frameworks:
India-Japan Act East Forum:
The meeting is primarily on northeastern states of India with an aim to fast track economic modernization and improve connectivity and develop human resource capabilities. The forum also projects to enhance the integration of the Northeast into India’s economic shape. These include road and rail projects, industrial parks and skill development programmes.
Global and Strategic Partnership between Japan and India
Established in 2014, this partnership includes security, commercial and technological cooperation. Most significantly, Japan has pledged to invest ¥10 trillion of private money in India over the next decade, signifying its long-term confidence in India’s economic potential. At the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in August 2025, the two countries adopted the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next Decade, which provides a roadmap for their continued engagement.
The Indo-Japanese talks are likely to cover regional security challenges, particularly China’s growing military and economic clout. The two countries also coordinate in the Quad and through bilateral engagements to be strategically aligned without directly confronting but enhancing their combined capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.
