Union Minister Shri G. Kishan Reddy led the launch of Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2024 at Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) in Dhanbad on July 25, 2024. The project is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” programme and was undertaken at 300 locations across 47 districts of 11 coal and lignite rich states.

Important persons like Shri Dulu Mahato, MP from Dhanbad and Secretary, Ministry of Coal, Shri Amrit Lal Meena, Chairman, Coal India Limited and other senior officials were present at the launch ceremony.
Tree Plantation Drive
On the launch day alone, around one million saplings were planted by various public sector coal and lignite undertakings. These PSUs have planted around 24 million saplings on 10,942 hectares of land in the coal sector in the last five years. The public companies have big targets. In the next five years, the aim is to cover over 15,350 hectares of land with plants. A target of 2,600 hectares has been set for this exercise.

The Government of India’s Vriksharopan Abhiyan 2024 aims to plant as many trees as possible. It was created to fight climate change and air pollution. As part of the programme, many trees will be planted across India. To increase diversity, it focuses on local species. The project involves neighbourhoods, schools and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). It makes people more aware of the importance of trees for the environment. It also aims to improve cities and create green jobs. The programme aims to involve young people in caring for the environment and promote a sustainability mindset.
