External Affairs Minister Jaishankar released the world’s first postage stamp of Ram Lalla in Laos

In a mix of cultural diplomacy and strategic talks, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent visit to Laos has highlighted India’s growing global influence and its commitment to promoting international relations.

During his three-day visit to Laos, Jaishankar unveiled an unprecedented set of commemorative postage stamps – the world’s first postage stamp dedicated to the Ayodhya idol of Lord Ram. There are two stamps in this set – one depicts the revered idol of Lord Rama and the other depicts Lord Buddha. This initiative highlights India’s rich cultural heritage and its emphasis on cultural diplomacy.

On social media, Jaishankar expressed his gratitude towards Laos and said that he “launched a series of special stamps celebrating our shared cultural heritage of Ramayana and Buddhism.” The gesture not only celebrates the historical and cultural ties between India and Laos, but also aligns with India’s broader Act East policy, which is entering its tenth year.

Jaishankar’s visit saw important diplomatic engagements, including meetings with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Komasith. Their discussions resulted in the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) focusing on ten Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) that aim to enhance Laos’ development under the Mekong Ganga Cooperation framework. Additionally, cooperation on digital solutions was also discussed, reinforcing India’s commitment to supporting regional progress.

A notable highlight of Jaishankar’s visit was his conversation with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Sipandon on trafficking of Indian citizens through cyber scam hubs. Jaishankar appreciated the efforts of the Lao government to rescue and assist Indian citizens and also raised the issue with the foreign ministers of Cambodia and Thailand to collaboratively address regional concerns.

In addition to his activities in Laos, Jaishankar attended the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where he held talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. They reviewed the prevailing situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and assessed previous agreements on troop disengagement along the border.

Jaishankar’s diplomatic tour extended to Tokyo, where he attended the Quad leaders’ meeting and held wide-ranging talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The discussions covered a range of strategic issues, underscoring the importance of the US-India partnership in the regional and global contexts.

India’s multifaceted approach to foreign policy – ​​combining cultural diplomacy with strategic alliances – reflects its growing role on the international stage. Jaishankar’s recent efforts not only emphasise India’s historical and cultural contributions but also highlight its proactive stance in addressing global and regional challenges.
