The prestigious Fleet Awards ceremony to honour the strategic achievements of the Eastern Fleet during the past year was held at Visakhapatnam on July 14, 2024. Her excellent performance and operational work resulted in INS Delhi being named the best ship of the Eastern Fleet.
Recognition of Excellence
The ceremony was held annually to honour various ships for outstanding performance in various categories. INS Kavaratti was adjudged as the Best Ship in the Corvette, OPV and LST categories. INS Shivalik, INS Sumedha and INS Sumitra were lauded for being the most spirited in the Sunrise Fleet and performing several difficult assignments throughout the year.
Guests of Honour
The ceremony was attended by key naval officials. Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, was the Chief Guest at the ceremony. The ceremony, officiated by Rear Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, showcased how the fleet works together as a team.
Functional Achievements and Activities
The Eastern Fleet was very busy protecting naval interests in and around the Indian Ocean Region during the year. The fleet showcased how well it can fire a variety of weapons in the air, on the surface and below. Along with the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force, the fleet participates in several regular naval exercises, amphibious operations and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercises.
Cultural Fest
Along with the official ceremonies, the Fleet Awards Ceremony also included cultural programmes that brought people together, boosted morale and honoured the commitment and rich history of the Indian Navy. The event is a once a year affair to not only honour the great achievements of the Navy but also make the Eastern Fleet more robust and prepared to play a strategic role.
About INS Delhi
INS Delhi, a guided missile frigate, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 15 November 1997. It was designed by the Directorate of Naval Design of the Indian Navy and built by Mazagon Dock Limited, Mumbai. It is the lead ship of the Delhi class. The ship is 163 meters long and weighs around 6,200 tonnes. INS Delhi is a powerful ship in military warfare as it is equipped with a wide range of weapons such as surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, anti-submarine torpedoes and a main gun. In addition, the ship is equipped with advanced electronic warfare and sensor systems that make it more useful in various sea conditions.
