The Constituent Assembly of India officially accepted the national flag on July 22, 1947. This was an important step in India’s path to freedom from colonial rule. This adoption was a symbol of the country’s hopes and solidarity in difficult times.
Meeting of the Constituent Assembly
The Constituent Assembly met at 10:00 am in New Delhi, under the chairmanship of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Since its creation on December 9, 1946, the Assembly has met several times to discuss a number of important issues. Under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru, the main agenda item was the flag issue.
Nehru’s resolution for the flag
Nehru wanted the national flag to have a white stripe and a navy blue Ashoka Chakra in the middle of the white stripe. The flag must be a horizontal triangle with dark gold, white and dark green colors. The design was intended to reflect the spirit and past of India and also be aesthetically pleasing. In a ratio of 2:3, measurements were performed equally. In his speech, Nehru spoke of his pride and memories of him, linking the flag with the deaths of freedom fighters. He knew that the country would face problems in the future, but he still saw it as a victory over the empire. Nehru stressed that the flag was not just a symbol of Indian nationalism; It was also a message of freedom for people around the world who were being governed.
Flag symbolism
Nehru said the flag was chosen because it was liked by many people and had historical significance, not because it had anything to do with any particular group. The colors reflect the rich history of the country. The Ashoka Chakra was chosen to connect the current flag with India’s long past, as it represents the ideals of India’s ancient civilization.
Support for the Assembly and amendments
Two changes were suggested, but not made. Several assembly members like Sarojini Naidu and S Radhakrishnan said they liked the style of the flag. Some people were against adding the swastika to the flag, but in the end everyone accepted the suggested design.
