Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Tuesday officially honored with the ‘Order of St. Andrew the Apostle’ award by Russian President Vladimir Putin for his exceptional services in promoting bilateral relations between the two countries.
“It is an honor to receive the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle. I dedicate it to the people of India,” Modi said in a post on Twitter after receiving the award at a ceremony here.
Established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great in honor of Saint Andrew, the first apostle of Jesus and patron saint of Russia, the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle is Russia’s highest state honor.
Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for helping find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis.
“I appreciate you paying attention to the most important issues, especially trying to find ways to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, primarily by peaceful means,” Putin was quoted as saying by the official TASS news agency. Putin made this statement during his talks with Modi in the Kremlin. The Russian leader expressed satisfaction with the growing trade between the two countries, which he said increased 66 percent last year and 20 percent in the first quarter of this year.
Putin once again congratulated Modi on his re-election as Indian Prime Minister. He also noted that Modi arrived in Russia for his first official foreign visit after being sworn in for another term at the head of the government following last month’s Indian general election. Putin also invited Modi to the BRICS summit to be held in the Russian city of Kazan in October. Addressing Modi, the Russian leader said: We will be glad to see you at the BRICS summit in Kazan this year. This year Russia holds the presidency of the BRICS. BRICS is an intergovernmental organization that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates have joined as new members of BRICS.
