On June 3, 2026, NASA said it was ending the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission, after it had lost contact with the spacecraft for an extended time. Launched in November 2013, MAVEN has been in orbit around Mars for more than 11 years.
MAVEN Mission Profile
MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) It was a NASA orbiter to study the upper atmosphere of Mars and the processes by which the planet’s atmosphere escapes into space. The spacecraft exceeded its original one-year prime mission and continued to perform science operations for over a decade. MAVEN also acted as a data relay orbiter for NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance rovers.
Contact Loss and Anomaly Evaluation
The last successful contact with MAVEN was on 6th December, 2025, before an upcoming occultation behind Mars. When it was time for the spacecraft to return, NASA’s Deep Space Network could not find a signal. Telemetry data, though limited, indicated that MAVEN had entered “safe mode” and was spinning at a very high rate. The rapid rotation is believed to have drained batteries aboard and knocked out power to the communication system. In February 2026, NASA convened an Anomaly Review Board that determined the spacecraft could not be recovered and would no longer be able to perform its science or data relay missions. A root cause final report is expected in late 2026.
MAVEN Scientific Role
MAVEN investigated the Sun and solar activity in the loss of most of the Martian atmosphere over geological time. Its findings are important to understanding how the planet changed from the warm, wet world it was to the dry, cold world we see today. The mission was part of NASA‘s Mars Exploration Program and contributed atmospheric data to a major study of the climate history of Mars.
