Researchers have discovered the production of ‘dark oxygen’ on the seafloor

Recent research published in Nature Geoscience has discovered the production of a new form of oxygen in the deep sea, called “dark oxygen,” which contradicts long-held scientific beliefs about oxygen production on Earth. Traditionally, oxygen on Earth was believed to be mainly produced by photosynthetic organisms such as plants and algae. This study shows a different way to bring air to dim places like the seabed.

The researchers made the discovery while working in the Clarion-Clipperton area of ​​the Pacific Ocean. At first they thought their sensors were malfunctioning because they were getting strange oxygen readings. A decade-long investigation showed that oxygen levels below 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) were steadily increasing.
